Andre Onana Man United transfer latest - Ruben Amorim U-turn, goalkeeper exit, PSR plan
The latest transfer news and rumours from Old Trafford centred on Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Manchester United's summer transfer window is expected to be busy after another season of woe.
Ruben Amorim has been unable to impose his own stamp on this United squad, yet. Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven arrived from Lecce and Arsenal respectively but, to quote Ralf Rangnick, this squad needs "open heart surgery" moving forward.
One position United wished they would not have to focus on this summer is in goal. Andre Onana was signed as their long-term replacement for David De Gea, but his time at the club has been a rollercoaster - to say the least.
With the transfer window almost upon us, The Manchester Evening News has decided to round up the snippets surrounding the future of the current No.1 at Old Trafford;
Man Utd want goalkeeper
The Manchester Evening News reported - on Easter Monday - that United are looking to add a new goalkeeper to their squad in the summer transfer window. We understand that a shot stopper to compete with Onana is seen as one would-be priority.
Altay Bayindir is United's No.2, but his performances have not been up to scratch when called upon for the Reds. The back-up goalkeeper may be looking for an exit to increase his chances of starting for Turkey at next summer's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Goalkeeper exit expected
While Bayindir may be considering an exit, it is thought that third choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton will be hanging up his gloves at the end of this season. The former Burnley player is out of contract in June, and the 39-year-old is considering bringing his commendable career to a close.
Heaton has made just three senior appearances for the Reds since returning on a free transfer from Aston Villa in 2021 for a second spell at the club.
Onana concerns
In January 2024, United and Cameroon came to an agreement, which allowed Onana to stay at Old Trafford for longer so he could feature in the Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur before AFCON. This decision was made due to the goalkeeper's fear of being replaced permanently while away.
Eventually, Bayindir would only stand in for Onana against Newport County in the FA Cup. It's said that this fear could still remain, in the longer-term, especially after Amorim's appointment in November.
Amorim's U-turn
United's head coach made the bold call to drop Onana for the Premier League game against Newcastle after his two mistakes against Lyon in their Europa League quarter-final first leg. Amorim quickly reinstated Onana for the second leg at Old Trafford, though.
No hard feelings were shown when Onana ran over to their subs bench to embrace Amorim and Bayindir when Harry Maguire scored the winner, but a strong message was still sent to the Cameroon international.
United's PSR stance could impact Onana decision
It has been well documented that Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been cutting costs at Old Trafford, due to fears about the Reds meeting the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) requirements. As such, money is tight to spend on new arrivals.
The Athletic's David Ornstein told NBC Sports, this week, that United did NOT want to replace Onana this summer. This is because they did not budget for an Onana replacement heading into the summer transfer window so should a replacement for him be signed, it would be seen as a last resort.
