All the Apple iPhone models WhatsApp will stop working on from next month

If you're still rocking this older hardware, it might be time to upgrade.

WhatsApp has confirmed that it will be suspending support for its app on certain models of iPhone as of next month. While those with newer models of iPhone's will be fine, those clinging to models from ten years ago might finally need to make the upgrade if they're an avid WhatsApp user [via Mirror Online].

Currently, WhatsApp supports iPhones that use iOS 12 and above. That's anything from the iPhone 5s and up, which was released in 2013.

However, Meta is set to change things slightly from May 5 with it saying that WhatsApp will soon only support iPhones that have iOS 15.1 installed. That new version of iOS isn't available on some of the older iPhone models, meaning owners will be out of luck when the update comes around.

"Currently, we provide support for and recommend using the following devices: iPhone running iOS 12 and newer," WhatsApp explained.

"Starting May 5, 2025, only iOS versions 15.1 and newer will be supported."

In terms of what devices this will actually affect, there are three handsets that will soon lose WhatsApp functionality: the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. If you own an iPhone model that's higher than this, then you're ok - but you'll need to make sure your phone's operating system is fully up to date.

Why is WhatsApp making the change?

As time moves on, older devices may struggle to keep up with new features and updates. Rather than allowing the app to perform badly and not get upgrades, WhatsApp would rather people stopped using it.

"Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates," WhatsApp added.

"Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp."

What phone should you upgrade to?

There are several excellent deals on smartphones right now, all of which will serve as a major upgrade from one of the decade-old handsets losing WhatsApp functionality. If you want to stick with an iPhone, this iPhone 13 contract at ID Mobile is currently a great offer.

It has no upfront cost and will set you back £20.99 per month, resulting in a total cost of £521.76 across the whole 24-month contract. It has 128GB of storage, more than enough for plenty of photos and videos, plus it has the up-to-date iOS for WhatsApp to work after May 5.

If you're considering making the jump to Android, then the Google Pixel 9 is currently available for a total contract price of £626.76. Normally £676/76, you can use code PIXEL50 at checkout to knock £50 off the upfront cost.

That means you'll pay £9 today, plus £24.99 each month, although the contract prices will rise each April by £1.50 per month. The Google Pixel 9 is the company's latest flagship phone, with 128GB of storage and some brilliant cameras that are perfect for capturing memories.
