How many points Man City need for Champions League qualification after Aston Villa win

Manchester City took a huge step towards qualification for the Champions League on Tuesday night, owing to their dramatic stoppage-time win over rivals Aston Villa.

Pep Guardiola's side took to Unai Emery's team at the Etihad Stadium. They quickly took the lead in the seventh minute through Bernardo Silva.

‌

However, a VAR check then saw Villa awarded a penalty for a foul on Morgan Rogers. Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, stepped up to equalise from the spot in the 18th minute.

The match looked to be drifting towards a draw. However, in the fourth minute of stoppage-time, Jeremy Doku beat his man and sent the ball into the box with Matheus Nunes there to put the ball in the net at the back post.

That victory is a big boost to City's Champions League hopes ahead of the final four Premier League games of the season. It saw them climb above both Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest - and into third place in the table.

There are now four points between City in third position and Chelsea in sixth position. This season, the top-five qualify for the Champions League for the 2025/2026 campaign.

‌

To guarantee a place in the top-five at the end of the season, City need to pick up 11 more points, which means they need to win all of their four remaining games. That would put them on 72 points.

Chelsea could also, potentially, get 72 points, if they win all their games, but that would then move them above Newcastle United and move Eddie Howe's side into sixth position. If the Magpies lose to Chelsea, they can get a maximum of 71 points.

The total City need will - of course - change if Chelsea drop any points between now and the end of the season. While City are in FA Cup semi-final action, the Blues take on Everton in the Premier League.

‌

If Chelsea draw that match, then it will reduce the points needed by City down to ten. A defeat for Chelsea would mean that City would just need nine points, comprising three wins from their remaining four games to guarantee a place in the Champions League at the end of next season.
