It's not everyday you see people randomly forming a queue in a secluded residential street.

Yet that's exactly what happened during our trip to Yorkshire this Easter when we came across a row of people in a neat line in the farming village of Wilton, near Pickering.

With the pretty St George's Church overlooking the county's rolling hills at one end of the street and idyllic houses lining each side, it seemed an unlikely setting for a gathering of any sorts.

But it turned out that what this little crowd was waiting for was a chippy tea - which was quite literally being delivered to their door.

The Alleyways Mobile Traditional Fish and Chips van makes various stops in the area, visiting a few different streets on different days of the week.

Tuesday was Wilton's turn, which proved quite convenient for us given we'd just turned up for a short break staying at the nearby Sands Farm Cottages.

Judging by the fact its arrival was so eagerly anticipated, we gathered it must be good, and thankfully we weren't wrong.

It's all cooked fresh in the van, with the fish - and the sausages our kids wanted - battered to order. And it's put in boxes, which helped keep it piping hot while we made our short walk back.

The chips were golden brown and fluffy on the inside and the fish was lovely and soft and filled every bit of the perfectly crisp batter.

The curry sauce we coated it all in was delicious too, as was the gravy the kids drizzled over their sausage and chips.

It wasn't badly priced either, costing around £30 for the lot, which is what we'd typically expect to pay for four of us these days.

The van started life in 2020 and with the Covid lockdown preventing people from eating at restaurants and cafes, it took off in a big way.

"We were able to provide top quality fish and chips to people’s local villages and towns," said owner David Walker, who runs the van with his wife Sarah and daughter Courtney.

"The van has always been popular and took us by surprise with the popularity. We serve food at villages, campsites, parties, school and work events, as well as weddings. We are always kept very busy."
