The lights lower and everyone rises to their feet. A sea of phone screens illuminates the arena.

Kaytranada hasn't come on yet, but the crowd is primed, waiting for the words that signal the start. "Kaytranada. Classic, Timeless."

The 32-year-old musician from Montreal appears on stage as the opening track from his latest album Timeless, plays and fireworks fly.

The setup is simple. A single table furnished with a Pioneer DJ controller, several small cameras and, most importantly, a glass of wine which he swirls, sniffs and swallows throughout the set before resting it back on what appears to be a stand resting in the corner.

There's a huge screen displaying all sorts of animations to accompany the unique electronic sound that's impossible not to dance to.

Kaytranada's silhouette is at the centre of it all with his face appearing on the screens on either side of the stage three songs in.

His mesmerising dance moves, visible throughout the 23,500-capacity arena, match the deep thuds and catchy melodies of his music.

It's the first UK show in the Timeless tour which kicked off in his native Canada last September and began its European leg last month.

The regular Parklife performer is no stranger to Manchester, but Co-op Live must be the biggest venue he's headlined here so far.

Nominated for a Grammy, his third solo album, is jam-packed with the enough tracks to fill the one-and-a-half-hour set in itself.

But the DJ, who started producing his own music at the age of 14, digs into his back catalogue, much to the audience's delight.

Songs from all three of his studio LPs, as well as his joint album with American rapper Aminé, are peppered throughout the set.

There are some special treats too, including a remix of Beyoncé's 'Cuff It' which he introduces by saying, 'LA went crazy for this s***'.

Manchester did miss out one thing though - the endless list of special guests who joined Kaytranada on stage in Los Angeles.

According to one review from the show last November, the DJ brought out several vocalists who appear on his latest album in LA.

Perhaps it's too much to expect all of these artists to be flown out to Europe just to appear on stage for a few minutes each night.

Instead, it's only Lou Phelps - Kaytranada's brother who is one of three support acts on the night - who joins the headliner on stage.

There are no complaints on the part of the crowd though. It seems like nothing could dampen the mood of those dancing throughout.
