Kym Marsh to reunite with two major Coronation Street stars in latest career move
"I couldn’t be more excited!"
Kym Marsh will reunited with two former Coronation Street co-stars as she undertakes her latest role.
The actress will be taking on the lead role in The Royal Exchange’s major adaptation of cult-classic Abigail’s Party. It was previously announced that Kym will take on the lead role of Beverly Moss in the Mike Leigh play.
Kym will be making her debut at the renowned Manchester theatre for the satirical comedy, which will run from April 4 to May 17. Set in the height of 1970s suburbia, the show follows Beverly as she hosts a cocktail party with her neighbours and friends, which quickly descends into chaos.
In the production, she will star alongside Our Town star Graeme Hawley, who will play her husband Laurence. But many may also recognise Graeme for playing the villainous John Stape in Corrie between 2007 and 2011. He has also appeared in Father Brown, Vera, Doctors and Red Rose.
Taking on the role of Susan will be Tupele Dorgu, who Coronation Street viewers will also know for having played Kelly Crabtree on the soap for six years. For three years on the cobbles, Tupele, Graeme and Kym all appeared in the show at the same time.
Since the soap, Tupele has most recently appeared in shows like Strike and Sophie Willan’s Alma’s Not Normal, which is set in Bolton. She also had a year-long stint in Hollyoaks as Dr Berrington.
In the Royal Exchange production, which will be directed by Natalie Abrahami, the cast will also include Kyle Rowe as Tony and Yasmin Taheri in the role of Angela.
Speaking about the play, Kym previously said: "I have always wanted to work at the Royal Exchange Theatre, it is such a beacon of incredible theatre in Manchester. Pair that with the brilliant Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party and working with Natalie to discover our version of Beverly, I couldn’t be more excited!
"Bev is fun, the life and soul of the party, but she is so much more than that! She’s a complex character and there is so much to unpack. I can’t wait to get in the rehearsal room!”
Alongside the role in Abigail’s Party, Kym continues to co-host BBC breakfast show Morning Live, which is filmed in Salford. She also plays the role of school canteen worker Nicky Walters in BBC’s Waterloo Road. Last year, Kym took on the iconic role of Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians: The Musical when it was performed at venues across the UK, including a two-week stint at Manchester’s Palace Theatre.
Abigail’s Party will be at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre from April 4 to May 17. Tickets, from £10, are available here.
