Man City get unexpected transfer boost from UEFA to cement status above Real Madrid and Liverpool

Manchester City accountants will be buoyed by a fresh £4m boost from UEFA for having more players than any other club in European in international competition.

Manchester City have been handed a financial boost by UEFA after sending more players to international tournaments and qualification fixtures than any other club in Europe.

UEFA have today confirmed the distribution of a huge £200m fund from their Club Benefits Programme, designed to compensate clubs for releasing players to national team competitions. The payments relate to the 2020-2024 cycle of tournaments including Euro 2024, 2020/21 and 2022/23 Nations Leagues, and 2022-24 European Qualifiers. It does not include the delayed Euro 2020 tournament which took place in the summer of 2021.

In that time, City can boast a Euro 2024 winner in Rodri, plus three English finalists, a Dutch semi-finalist and six quarter-finalists among 14 representatives in total. They also had four players at the 2021 Nations League finals and three in the 2023 edition plus others in qualifying action.

With compensation awarded equally to clubs for each player released for a Nations League or European Qualifying match, plus a fixed amount per player per day during Euro 2024, UEFA have now confirmed totals for 901 separate clubs across Europe - with no club earning more than City.

The Blues pocket an impressive €5,173,310.82 from the fund (£4,444,132.66), beating all domestic and European rivals across the same period. Arsenal, (£3.34m), Liverpool (£3.04m) and Manchester United (£2.71m) were next on the list in the Premier League.

Real Madrid earned £4.11m from the huge fund, while Barcelona pocket £3.8m and Bayern Munich get £3.75m. Inter Milan (£4m) and Paris Saint-Germain (£3.8m) were other high earners. However City were the only club to surpass the €5m mark and will continue to boast a high number of internationals in this summer's Nations League finals where Spain and Portugal compete against France and Germany.

That could see Rodri return from injury, as well as the Portuguese trio of Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and Matheus Nunes in action. Stefan Ortega is now an option for Germany although Ilkay Gundogan has retired from international duty.
