Manchester United could hand Matheus Cunha the perfect transfer gift - if he signs - as negotiations to bring the Wolves forward to Old Trafford continue.

The Manchester Evening News understands that Cunha is viewed as a major target for Ruben Amorim - despite his hefty £62.5million release clause. The Brazilian, who signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal at Molineux in February, is expected to leave the Midlands club at the end of the season.

‌

However, to trigger his release clause, United may need to sell one or two players to free up some cash. Marcus Rashford - who is thought to no longer have a future at United - could be one potential solution with Aston Villa holding the option to make his transfer permanent for £40million.

That being said, sources close to Cunha reckon he's "optimistic" a deal can be struck. After refusing to break the £60million barrier for any of their five signings last summer, United might look to pay for the Brazilian forward in instalments.

Discussions are reported to be continuing and, if a transfer goes through, the Reds will already have the perfect welcome gift for the 25-year-old.

Indeed, with Rashford likely to depart, the club's iconic No.10 shirt could soon be up for grabs.

‌

At Wolves, Cunha initially wore the No.12 shirt before switching to No.10 for the second time in his career, having previously worn it for Hertha Berlin. Before touching down in the Premier League, Cunha wore the No.19 and No.9 shirts during his time at Atletico Madrid.

Reds' head coach Ruben Amorim billed Cunha as "real quality" before their 1-0 defeat to Wolves last week.

"He [Wolves coach Vitor Pereira] is playing a 3-4-3, he's doing quite well! He's changing some players, he has real quality players - Cunha and all these guys, they have real quality."
