Ruud van Nistelrooy told where his next job is as Leicester sack looms and three shortlisted

Ruud van Nistelrooy could face the sack at Leicester following their relegation from the Premier League and a former Man United player has suggested where he needs to go next

The future of Ruud van Nistelrooy as Leicester boss is uncertain, with suggestions being made about his next potential move. The Dutchman was given the responsibility of keeping the Foxes in the Premier League when he took over in November.

However, following a 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool on Sunday, the club's relegation to the Championship was confirmed. Under the former Manchester United striker's leadership, Leicester have managed to secure only eight points from 20 matches.

Van Nistelrooy has confessed that he doesn't yet know if he will retain his position and is expected to meet with the club's owners and board members soon. Sky Sports News has reported that the 48-year-old will remain in charge until the end of the current season, but a list of three possible replacements has already been compiled.

The potential successors are believed to include ex-England interim manager Lee Carsley, Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl, and former Southampton coach Russell Martin. If Van Nistelrooy is dismissed, he will need to put in significant effort to restore his tarnished reputation.

Former United and Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster suggests that a return to the Netherlands might be beneficial for Van Nistelrooy as he recovers from this setback.

At the beginning of his coaching career, he was given opportunities within PSV's youth ranks, later becoming the first team manager and winning the Dutch Cup, before leaving the club due to a perceived lack of support.

Speaking on his Fozcast podcast, Foster said: "I'm pretty sure that when they get relegated, they can sack him for free, basically, and that's probably what will happen. I think Ruud probably needs to get back to Holland, get his name and his stock a bit higher and get a bit of success."

Foster referred to Van Nistelrooy's brief stint as United's interim manager, where he secured three wins and a draw in four games. Despite his subsequent departure and Amorim's appointment, he expressed his opinion that Van Nistelrooy would have been a better choice in the short term.

Foster said: "Would Ruud van Nistelrooy have done a better job than Ruben Amorim at Man United, if he'd have stayed on? I think it's 'probably' because he had that respect, and I just don't think that you could do much worse than Amorim has done."

When questioned about Van Nistelrooy not being a long-term solution, Foster said: "I don't think Amorim is [a long term fix] either, to be honest with you. Amorim set his stall out last week when they won that game against Lyon and then he said he was basically going to play the kids for the rest of the season.

"It just signals that the Premier League doesn't matter so subconsciously, all of those players will take their foot off the gas a little bit."

Van Nistelrooy, who is contracted with Leicester until the summer of 2027, is reportedly hesitant to leave without compensation. If he were to be dismissed before the end of June, it's suggested that the Foxes could face difficulties in adhering to the PSR (profit and sustainability) regulations for this financial year.
