'The kids were playing on the trampoline... then we heard this big bang'

A car almost landed in a garden after falling down the edge of a nearby car park

A homeowner has told of the moment a car came hurtling down an embankment and almost landed in his back garden as children played on a trampoline outside.

The vehicle, which had been previously parked in a nearby car park, reversed down a verge behind a row of homes on Lord Street, between Bury and Heywood, at around 5pm on Monday (April 21).

Pictures showed fire crews at the scene after rescuing the occupants of the vehicle, which had to be hoisted back up using specialist equipment.

The homeowner, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "We live at the bottom of a steep to a church. There is a car park there but no barriers.

"The kids were outside on the trampoline. Then we heard this big bang.

"The driver had clearly done to do a turn or reversed and gone back down the hill. They were close to landing in our garden or next door, but they hit a tree on the way down which saved them."

Fire crews and paramedics were called to the incident and used a back garden to help rescue the two people from inside the vehicle. No serious injuries were reported.

"The fire service have hoisted the car up and managed to move it eventually," the homeowner said. "We just heard this massive bang, came round the back and said 'is that a car?'.

"They had to use my garden to get access. There wasn't any real damage and the emergency services were excellent."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just after 5pm this evening (Monday 21st April), two fire engines from Heywood and Bury Central fire station were called to reports of a car hanging over the edge of a pathway near Heap Brow, Heywood.

“Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters used specialist equipment to secure the car and get two people out of the vehicle safely. Firefighters were in attendance for around an hour."
