UK tourists planning to visit Lanzarote issued three-word message after floods
Clean-up work continues in some areas of the island impacted by flood damage
Brits planning to visit Lanzarote have been told that “everything is safe” as the island continues to recover from flooding two weeks ago.
Heavy rain hit the island, one of the most popular in the Canaries, on Saturday, April 12, resulting in flooding. The government even had to declare a state of emergency as a result.
The UK Foreign Office even issued travel warnings for the areas Costa Teguise, San Bartolome and the capital of Arrecife were particularly affected.
The weather front moved on by the following day and the travel warning was removed while the state of emergency downgraded.
But island continues to deal with the cleanup in the areas impacted by the floods with reports of “dried-up mud” in the streets and “overflowing sewage”.
Some hotels have even been forced to close on the island due to flood damage. The flooding has also impacted the environment with runoff from ravines contaminating beaches.
Yet a group that promotes tourism on the island has reassured holidaymakers that the island is safe to visit. Augusto Ferreira, president of the Lanzarote Loves Tourism Association, told teh Manchester Evening News: “We want to tell all our tourists planning to come to Lanzarote that everything is safe, the storm is now behind us, and warm, sunny days are ahead.
“Our island is completely safe to travel to, and we encourage everyone to visit us.Tourism is very important to our Island and vital to our economy.”
He explained that many of the areas have returned to normal and that the island is “functioning normally” and added that there is no serious impact for holidaymakers.
