If you're looking to spend a nice day out with the family or kids and get some fresh air away from the city then you'd be surprised how many parks and picnic areas are close to the city centre.

While Wigan council lists a few official nature reserves that the public can visit, there are also some hidden gems that people in the area may not be aware of.

We've compiled a list of the best parks and picnic areas scattered around Wigan that are perfect for families and kids who want to spend some time with nature.

Pennington Flash Country Park

Pennington Flashes is home to a beautiful scenic lake and marshland which contains a wide variety of animals, birds and insects.

In fact, over 230 species of birds have been recorded at Pennigton Flash Country Park, making it the perfect location for a bit of bird-watching while enjoying a nice picnic.

The park also has a mapped out mile walk that will take you around the 70-hectare lake, allowing you to take in the immense view of the natural scenery.

Mesnes Park

Located on the edge of Wigan's town centre, Mesnes park is great to walk around with the family while admiring the sights and scenery.

Adorned with a bandstand and waterfall there are plenty of things to appreciate when visiting the park - you can also keep the kids busy at the children's play area.

If you're visiting on a hot day, or just fancy a sweet treat, the pavilion building houses Frederick's ice cream parlour.

Haigh Woodland Park

Haigh Woodland Park offers a wide range of exploration activities for kids and adults while promoting a fun and healthy lifestyle.

Activities include high rope courses, adventure golf, a miniature railway, and wooded hiking trails.

The park is not too far away from the city centre and is only a small driveway with a spacious car park included for large vehicles.

Open from 8am to 6pm every day of the week.

Amberswood and Low Hall

While Amberswood and Low Hall was previously an area that came from mining, it is now a rich wildlife area with 160 hectares of nature reserve.

There are plenty of small lakes and ponds which offer a great view and atmosphere if you're planning a picnic.

A variety of public footpaths also mean you can enjoy a nice little walk while visiting the area.
